Anthropic has announced a $1.5 million investment in the Python Software Foundation (PSF) over the next two years, aimed at strengthening the security of the Python ecosystem. The funding is directed at concrete improvements in CPython and the Python Package Index (PyPI), including the development of automated package review tools and the creation of a large-scale malware dataset to better detect and prevent supply-chain attacks.
Beyond security tooling, the investment will also support the PSF's core programs, such as the Developer in Residence initiative and community grants. These programs underpin much of Python's day-to-day maintenance and long-term sustainability. PyPI, which serves as the primary distribution channel for third-party Python packages, remains a critical piece of infrastructure and an increasingly attractive target for attackers, making sustained investment in its security essential.
This funding arrives as Python continues to expand its reach and relevance. The language has grown to 2.6 million contributors worldwide and has seen 48% year-over-year growth, maintaining a dominant position in AI and data science workloads. Its combination of readability, mature libraries, and a broad contributor base has made it a default choice for research, production systems, and education alike.
That endurance has been noted publicly by Python’s creator. Guido van Rossum has previously pointed out, including in discussions around GitHub’s Octoverse data, that Python’s long-term strength lies in its clarity, accessibility, and community-driven evolution. Even as languages like TypeScript gain traction in other parts of the stack, Python has retained a central role in AI and education precisely because it lowers barriers to entry while scaling to complex problems.
Anthropic's contribution reflects this reality. The PSF relies heavily on corporate sponsorships, grants, and donations to sustain the infrastructure behind one of the world’s most widely used programming languages. As Python's role in AI-driven systems continues to grow, investments in its security and core maintenance increasingly function as investments in the broader software ecosystem that depends on it.
