Prometheus on the Edge
When setting up Prometheus in edge environments there are two main scenarios:
When you are monitoring the edge from a central location: In this case, you have a central Prometheus server (or a cluster of them) that scrapes metrics from multiple edge locations. The edge devices or locations do not run Prometheus themselves; they simply expose metrics endpoints that the central server scrapes. Connections may be impossible to establish from the central server to the edge devices due to network restrictions, so you may need to set up VPNs or use other networking solutions to enable scraping. We've covered this scenario earlier in this guide and mentioned PushProx as a possible solution. Some less known tools in this space include Prometheus Proxy and Prometheus Relay Exporter
