2020 and Beyond: The AI Boom and The Rise of Generative AI
In 2020, OpenAI introduced its popular GPT-3. The company also introduced DALL·E, and several other Generative AI models, notably GPT-4, a more powerful version that has superior intelligence compared to GPT-2, GPT-3, and BERT. Other models have also been developed by other companies, such as:
- Stable Diffusion: Launched in 2022, Stable Diffusion is a text-to-image model using diffusion techniques, marking its role in the AI boom. Developed by the CompVis Group and Runway, with support from Stability AI and nonprofit data, it's designed for generating images from text, as well as tasks like inpainting and image-to-image translations. Unlike some predecessors, its code and model weights are open-sourced, allowing it to run on consumer-grade hardware with a minimum of 4 GB VRAM, making advanced AI accessible outside of cloud services.
- Midjourney: Developed by Midjourney, Inc., this Generative AI creates images from text prompts, akin to DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. Launched into open beta on July 12, 2022, it's part of the AI boom. Led by David Holz, Midjourney is profitable and users generate art via Discord bot commands.
