Introduction to the Foundations of GitHub Copilot
Choosing the Right GitHub Copilot Plan
GitHub Copilot is offered as a paid add-on to GitHub and is available in two main categories: individual and business. Since there are two types of users - individuals and organizations - GitHub Copilot maintains two separate pricing structures.
For individual users, Copilot is available in three plans: Free, Pro, and Pro+.
The Free plan allows up to 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests per month, making it a good entry point for experimentation.
When you're ready for more, the Copilot Pro costs $10/month (or $100/year) and provides unlimited completions, access to advanced models, and 300 premium requests per month.
For power users, the Copilot Pro+ is priced at $39/month (or $390/year) and raises the limit to 1,500 premium requests, with access to all available models and GitHub Spark, GitHub's AI-powered platform for creating and sharing micro apps.
For organizations, Copilot offers two plans: Business and Enterprise. These mirror the Pro and Pro+ plans (minus Spark) but add team-oriented features such as user management, advanced authentication using SAML SSO, usage metrics, IP indemnification (a legal protection against intellectual property infringement), and greater control over data.
It's worth noting that these plans are subject to change. They weren't set in stone and have already changed since Copilot's initial launch. Always check the official GitHub Copilot pricing page.
Here is a summary of the pricing plans for individuals:
| Feature | Free | Pro | Pro+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | \$0 (limited to 2000 completions) | \$10/month or \$100/year | \$39/month or \$390/year |
