Docker has informed Docker Hub users who created "organizations" that their accounts will be deleted, along with all images, if they do not upgrade to a paid team plan that costs $420 USD per year. This move affects open source communities that have been using this service for years, and many open source projects may be forced to pay for this service, causing significant anxiety and additional work for open source maintainers.
The company's new CTO has since published an apology for the poorly communicated decision, but the issues surrounding Docker's Open Source program remain unresolved. Alternatives such as GitHub's Container Registry or GitLab are available, but concerns about their reliability and potential for charging in the future have been raised.
