ChatGPT introduces an app ecosystem with an Apps SDK Preview, enabling developers to create interactive applications integrated into conversations, initially available to non-EU users with partners like Booking.com and Spotify.
Developers can now start building interactive apps for ChatGPT using the new Apps SDK, which is available in preview.
The apps are designed to integrate seamlessly into conversations within ChatGPT, responding to natural language and offering interactive interfaces.
OpenAI has provided detailed documentation, design guidelines, and example apps to assist developers in creating these new applications.
Later this year, developers will be able to submit their apps for review and publication with monetization options.
All apps must adhere to OpenAI’s usage policies, ensuring they are appropriate for all audiences and comply with third-party integration rules.
Developers can reach a large number of ChatGPT users using the Apps SDK.
Eleven more partner apps are scheduled for release later this year.

A new wave of interactive applications has been launched within ChatGPT, enabling users to interact with these apps through natural language. Developers can now create these apps using the newly introduced Apps SDK, which is currently in preview. These apps are designed to integrate smoothly into conversations, offering interactive interfaces and adapting to user context. Initially, these apps are available to non-EU users across various ChatGPT plans, including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. Early partners include companies like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow, with more partners expected to join later in the year.
The Apps SDK is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that allows ChatGPT to connect to external tools and data. This SDK enables developers to design both the logic and interface of their apps, and it is open source, meaning apps built with it can run anywhere that adopts this standard. Developers can use their own code to define the app’s interface and chat logic, and connect directly with their backend for features like user login and premium access.
For users, apps can be activated by name within a conversation, and ChatGPT can suggest relevant apps based on the context of the discussion. For example, during a conversation about buying a home, ChatGPT might suggest the Zillow app to browse listings on an interactive map. When using an app for the first time, users are prompted to connect, with clear information on what data might be shared.
Developers can start building and testing apps immediately, with detailed documentation, design guidelines, and example apps provided to support them. OpenAI plans to begin accepting app submissions for review and publication later this year, along with a directory for browsing and searching apps. Monetization options will also be detailed, including support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which enables instant checkout within ChatGPT.
