Dapr is an open source, portable distributed application runtime that provides building blocks for common microservice patterns such as service invocation, state management, pub/sub messaging, bindings, secrets, and actors. It runs as a sidecar alongside applications and integrates with Kubernetes, VMs, and local environments, abstracting underlying infrastructure and middleware without hiding them. Dapr fits at the application runtime layer, sitting between application code and platform services, and targets teams building cloud-native, event-driven systems that want portability and standardized patterns without adopting a full service mesh.
